PermaBlitz #4 will be held at a rural residence in Paradise, CA. The location will be provided upon RSVP confirmation.

We will be implementing several facets of a recently completed permaculture design for the PermaBlitz Host and site.

Projects & Activities may vary from list below.

PROJECTS:

  • Plant out a berm with native plants and install drip irrigation
  • Prepare a food forest for later planting
  • Layout a keyhole garden bed
  • Build a pad for a rainwater collection tank, connect downspout and, if time, place the tank

ACTIVITIES:

  • Build 4-5 worm towers in raised beds using 4-6” pipe
  • Inoculate logs placed for erosion control w/mushroom spawn
  • Build bug hotel and talk about their benefits to garden ecosystem
  • Build lizard habitat using existing materials (rocks/wood etc.) and talk about their benefits to garden ecosystem
  • Build a birdbath out of existing materials to increase pollinators/birds
  • Build a children’s play feature out of existing materials (music wall, stepping stone hopscotch, climbing structure… TBD)

PARKING:

  • THERE IS LIMITED PARKING! Please plan on carpooling!
  • We can set up a shuttle from the Paradise Park & Ride to the PermaBlitz site if there is interest
  • We will set up a carpool from Chico [at the Chico Park and Ride, Highway 32 at Fir Street –east side]
  • Please let us know when you RSVP if you will carpool and/or use the PB shuttle

MISC:

  • LUNCH will be provided by the Host; please let us know if you have special dietary requirements when you RSVP

  • All participants must sign a release of liability waiver when they arrive

Volunteer for PB#3! People who volunteer get additional hands-on knowledge, credit toward becoming a PB Host in the future and Early Access to this and PB#4 in October! Sign up online today!

We will be implementing several facets of a recently completed permaculture design for the PermaBlitz Host and site.  Projects & Activities may vary from list below.

PROJECTS:

  • Wicking Bed –water conserving raised vegetable garden bed with small rock in a reservoir below the soil so plants literally wick up the water they need.
  • Lasagna Style Raised Beds -layer diverse nitrogen and carbon materials to create the foundation for healthy soil in 2 new raised beds. One bed will be planted with ‘Black Beauty’ zucchini seed with the goal of saving seed for the Chico Seed Lending Library.
  • Outdoor Sink -built near the fenced vegetable garden the sink, when used, will drain to the wicking bed or nearby mulch basin.

ACTIVITIES:

  • Tree Planting & Compost Extract -show the proper way to plant trees (using Asian pear, persimmon and Autumn blaze type maple trees) with mulch basins for water conservation then make and use compost extract.
  • Building Rocket Stoves -build efficient and hot burning rocket stoves which use small amounts of kindling/wood for fuel (we plan to build 3 or 4 and you may purchase one for $20).
  • Citrus Tree Pruning –learn the best methods for pruning Citrus for optimal growth and health.
  • Drip Irrigation for Plant Guilds -learn how to convert an existing drip irrigation system for trees to a plant guild system using micro-spray and shrubler emitters.

We are gearing up for PermaBlitz #2 in October! As an introduction to permaculture and its application to PermaBlitz #2 we host 2 Pre-Blitz Gatherings, the first of which is Sunday, August 20th from 10am-1pm at the Chico Library meeting room (1108 Sherman Ave.). This Gathering will cover…

PERMACULTURE ETHICS & PRINCIPLES:

We will discuss the Ethics and Principles of Permaculture and their practical application to the Host site for PermaBlitz #2 located in Butte Creek Canyon. Interactive forums will take place between 2-3 short presentations as we move through the 12 Holmgren permaculture principles.

At this time the PB #2 permaculture design is in progress and is being compiled by Earthshed Solutions’ certified designers and PDC graduate interns. PermaBlitz projects and activities will include, but are not limited to:

  • renovation of an existing vegetable garden for better accessibility
  • determining contour using A-frame levels for wattle applications, swales and level sills
  • guild building 5 existing fruit tree groupings with diverse plants
  • establishing a medicinal herb garden
  • building an outdoor sink
  • building a tool organizer
  • making and using compost extract
  • making seed threshing screens
  • and more!

WHAT TO BRING:

  • Please bring a small dish to share as well as your own dishes, utensils, and cup for the POTLUCK. There are limited dishes available in the library so please remember to bring your own if you can. If you do use library dishes we ask that you wash them when you are done.

Expand your toolbox for withstanding drought and learn how to make every drop of water count. This HOW (Hands On Workshop) will introduce you to various techniques you can easily implement on your property to create lasting water resilience. Resilient systems are better able to bounce back from stresses caused by long or short term changes; such as our current drought.

During this workshop, you will learn about various techniques for water retention and conservation currently in place on this 8 acre permaculture homestead. Learn skills and technologies that are designed to be effective in practice, easy to maintain, affordable, and which can be replicated on any site, at any scale.

Demonstrations and hands on learning will include:

  • Living Soil – how to improve soil biological health for maximum water retention and plant health
  • Rainwater Harvesting –how to collect rainwater into tanks and infiltration basins for productive food systems
  • Water Reuse –how to reuse & recycle water, including greywater, for your landscape & gardens
  • Irrigation –how to effectively use various irrigation methods such as ollas, wicking beds, and drip systems

California is still in a drought – Save Water with Greywater!

Learn how to divert greywater from a washing machine to irrigate the landscape with a laundry to landscape (L2L) greywater system. L2L greywater systems are simple, affordable, and easy to maintain. This workshop is taught by a certified greywater installer and will give you the necessary skills to install your own L2L system to irrigate your landscape each time you do laundry; saving you water, resources, and money.

This workshop will cover:

  • Basic overview of L2L greywater, legality in Butte County, and 12 guidelines
  • How to install a simple greywater system from a washing machine -including how to source greywater parts
  • How to prepare your landscape to receive greywater and the best choice in plants
  • Common pitfalls and how to avoid them

This is a Hands On Workshop. Participants will participate in the construction of a real L2L greywater system – start to finish. All participants will receive handouts and informational resources for use at home.

NOTE: No prior experience is required but for better understanding it is recommended participants attend the FREE CPG May Gathering on May 15th from 10am to 1pm at the Chico Library meeting room (1108 Sherman Ave. Chico, CA). The May Gathering will cover common greywater systems including the L2L system, a mock up of parts/materials required for a L2L system as well as current California codes for greywater. Participants who attend the May Gathering will receive a promotional code for $10 off this installation workshop.

Greywater Systems in California

This month we’ll explore common greywater systems with an emphasis on Laundry to Landscape (L2L) systems.

Greywater -water reused from sinks, showers, and washing machines- can significantly reduce your outdoor water consumption. Greywater systems are especially important in times of drought; California is still in a drought!

  • Common greywater systems (like laundry to landscape and branched drain systems)

  • Site Analysis: Explore observation, sector analysis and pattern recognition for a productive site study.
  • WAS Design: Understand how Water, Access and Structures interconnect on your property and how you can maximize water efficiency. We’ll do a Q&A session for water harvesting.
  • Zones of Use: Learn about permaculture zones and how to how to map them out. We’ll do a ‘Design Zone 1’ activity.

2016 CPG GATHERING SCHEDULE: (Please note Gatherings are now bi-monthly with summers off)

ALL Gatherings are held at the Chico Branch Library (1108 Sherman Ave. Chico) from 10am – 1pm. Gatherings are FREE 1-2 hour interactive lectures with open discussions about the specific monthly topic.
