Land Restoration and Water Retention Strategies Workshop 10/11/15

Oct H-oW 1

This is the Chico Permaculture Guilds FIFTH and FINAL workshop of the year. The workshop will take place Sunday, October 11th from 10am to 4pm in Oroville, CA.  Please RSVP to attend this workshop by following this link.

In this unique workshop we will explore various land restoration techniques including erosion control and water retention methods to reinvigorate a sloping 4 acre site in Oroville, CA.

This workshop will cover:

  • What land restoration is and why it’s important
  • Why including erosion control and water retention strategies will allow the restorative process to be more effective
  • How the strategies are accomplished using both heavy equipment and simple tools
  • How to manage the land after these installations

A wide range of materials: logs, branches, mulch, straw, and wattle will be used. You will see what equipment is used and how to place the material on contour, dig a swale, and cut contour land rips to slow, spread and sink rainwater.

The combination of these techniques and materials are all designed to retain water, rehydrate the landscape and heal land that has been compacted by over grazing for the last century as well as recently experiencing a grass fire.

The curriculum includes a lecture along with hands on practices and a demonstration of some completed elements for you to see up close.

Full event information and registration page here: https://cpghow-land-restore.eventbrite.com/

What to bring:

  • Paper, pens/pencils and clipboard for taking notes
  • Hat, gloves and sturdy closed toe shoes
  • Water bottle (preferably not glass)
  • This is a POTLUCK so please bring a dish to share and your own utensils, plate and a cup
  • Chair to sit in

FAQs:

  • What are my transport/parking options getting to the event? If there is interest we can set up a carpool from Chico to Oroville at the Chico Park and Ride [Highway 32 at Fir Street]. Let us know of your interest when you RSVP.
  • Please leave your pets at home

Workshop Cost: Suggested donation is $40, no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Please contact Stephanie Ladwig-Cooper with any questions at 530-828-6390 or email to modcpg@gmail.com. Full event information and registration page here: https://cpghow-land-restore.eventbrite.com/

Rooftop Rainwater Harvesting System Installation 5/24/15

This is the Chico Permaculture Guilds THIRD workshop of the season and the last before our summer break (gatherings and workshop will resume in September). The workshop will take place May 24th from 11am to 3pm.  Please RSVP to attend this workshop by following this link.

This Hands-on Workshop will teach you how to utilize the RAINWATER we seasonally receive to design and install a rooftop rainwater harvesting system. Having the knowledge and skill to direct rainwater from your rooftop to your landscape increases your property DROUGHT RESILIENCE.

Rainwater Harvesting Potential: 1″ of rain on a 1000 square foot surface will yield ~600 gallons of water.

This workshop is focused on specific techniques and strategies for implementing a permaculture design and directly relates to our May monthly gathering topic, Water Harvesting in a Mediterranean Climate. You don’t need to have attended the gathering though it will help you better understand the activities of the workshop.

Details of the Workshop:

PLEASE RSVP TO ATTEND THIS WORKSHOP BY FOLLOWING THIS LINK.

Permaculture Project Attendees are Participating In: The use of passively harvested rainwater from the house rooftop to the surrounding landscape which is a forest garden in its initial phases.

We will begin the workshop by walking around the project target area to familiarize attendees with the current design for rooftop rainwater collection. We will briefly go over the components of a rainwater harvesting system, rainwater calculations as well as the design strategies employed for this particular project. We will then ask attendees to calculate the total volume of rainwater given a specific rainfall event. Then to also calculate the volume of rainwater for the particular workshop downspout that will distribute rainwater to the earthworks/storage systems within forest garden.

The rest of the workshop will be hands-on for learning specific techniques to:

  • Connect the downspout to the earthworks for distribution to the landscape
  • Create infiltration trenches and basins (earthworks) based on rainfall volume
  • Ensure level infiltration trenches and basins using an A-frame level
  • Ensure access pathways are protected and easily traversed
  • Protect the soil before, during and after the installation

Downspt-Infil-BasinsTHIS IS A FREE EVENT. Donations are accepted and appreciated to further CPG education and outreach within our community.

What to bring:

  • Paper, pens/pencils and clipboard for taking notes
  • Calculator for rainwater calculations
  • Hat, gloves and sturdy closed toe shoes
  • Water bottle (preferably not glass)
  • A-frame level (from the last workshop, there will be more to purchase)
  • If you have a shovel please bring it along as well
  • This is a POTLUCK so please bring a dish to share and your own utensils, plate and a cup

FAQs:

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

If there is interest we can set up a carpool at the Chico Park and Ride [Highway 32 at Fir Street]. Let us know of your interest when you RSVP.

First CPG Workshop of the Season!

HO Header1This is a Hands-on Workshop focused on the permaculture design process and directly relating to our Chico Permaculture Guild March monthly gathering topic, Map and Analyze Zones and Sectors. You don’t need to have attended the gathering though it will help you better understand the activities of the workshop.

This workshop will take place Sunday, March 29th from 11-3pm. This is a FREE event. To register please follow this link to RSVP and let us know you will be attending.

Details of the Workshop:

  • We will go into detail on how to analyze the zones and sectors of a new area of CPG members Anne and Robert’s property in Oroville.
  • We will walk the property and talk about how to design with slope in mind as we learn about the different sectors of Anne and Roberts property and how they mapped them out.
  • You’ll learn how to analyze the function/characteristics of specific elements (using examples such as rabbits and oak trees) then how to find the most appropriate functional connections between different elements before placing them into their respective zones.
  • We will do a fun random assembly activity that will help fully open up our brains to all kinds of possibilities when placing the desired elements.
  • As a final design exercise you will be given a wish list of elements (animals, aquaponics, gardens etc.) that you will need to then analyze and place into a design of your own during the workshop.

You’ll go home with a better understanding of the importance of zones and a practical application of how to create a sector map; this hands-on skill building workshop will lead you further down the road toward creating a final permaculture design for your own site.
