We will be implementing several facets of a recently completed permaculture design for the PermaBlitz Host and site.

Projects & Activities may vary from list below.

PROJECTS:

Plant out a berm with native plants and install drip irrigation
Prepare a food forest for later planting
Layout a keyhole garden bed
Build a pad for a rainwater collection tank, connect downspout and, if time, place the tank

ACTIVITIES:

Build 4-5 worm towers in raised beds using 4-6” pipe
Inoculate logs placed for erosion control w/mushroom spawn
Build bug hotel and talk about their benefits to garden ecosystem
Build lizard habitat using existing materials (rocks/wood etc.) and talk about their benefits to garden ecosystem
Build a birdbath out of existing materials to increase pollinators/birds
Build a children’s play feature out of existing materials (music wall, stepping stone hopscotch, climbing structure… TBD)

PARKING:

THERE IS LIMITED PARKING! Please plan on carpooling!
We can set up a shuttle from the Paradise Park & Ride to the PermaBlitz site if there is interest
We will set up a carpool from Chico [at the Chico Park and Ride, Highway 32 at Fir Street –east side]
Please let us know when you RSVP if you will carpool and/or use the PB shuttle

We will be implementing several facets of a recently completed permaculture design for the PermaBlitz Host and site. Projects & Activities may vary from list below.

PROJECTS:

Wicking Bed –water conserving raised vegetable garden bed with small rock in a reservoir below the soil so plants literally wick up the water they need.
Lasagna Style Raised Beds -layer diverse nitrogen and carbon materials to create the foundation for healthy soil in 2 new raised beds. One bed will be planted with ‘Black Beauty’ zucchini seed with the goal of saving seed for the Chico Seed Lending Library.
Outdoor Sink -built near the fenced vegetable garden the sink, when used, will drain to the wicking bed or nearby mulch basin.

ACTIVITIES:

Tree Planting & Compost Extract -show the proper way to plant trees (using Asian pear, persimmon and Autumn blaze type maple trees) with mulch basins for water conservation then make and use compost extract.
Building Rocket Stoves -build efficient and hot burning rocket stoves which use small amounts of kindling/wood for fuel (we plan to build 3 or 4 and you may purchase one for $20).
Citrus Tree Pruning –learn the best methods for pruning Citrus for optimal growth and health.
Drip Irrigation for Plant Guilds -learn how to convert an existing drip irrigation system for trees to a plant guild system using micro-spray and shrubler emitters.

PERMACULTURE DESIGN PROCESS:

We will have 3-4 short presentations with interactive forums in between as we move through the permaculture design process as it applies to the PermaBlitz Host site. This Gathering counts toward becoming a PermaBlitz Host.

At this time the PB #3 permaculture design is in the site assessment phase and is being compiled by Earthshed Solutions’ certified permaculture designers and PDC graduate interns. PermaBlitz projects and activities will include, but are not limited to.

PermaBlitz #2 will be held at an rural residence in Butte Creek Canyon. The location will be provided upon RSVP confirmation.

PB#2 will be open to a limited number of Participants, please be sure to RSVP as soon as possible to ensure your spot!

We will be implementing several facets of a recently completed permaculture design for the PermaBlitz Host and site.

Projects:

Water & Contour: determine contour using an A-frame level to place straw wattles on slope
Water & Swales: move and level an existing swale’s sill, create a diversion trench from swale as overflow to nearby fruit trees
Vegetable Garden: renovate by raising part of a vegetable garden bed for easier senior access
Medicinal Garden: add a rock border and plant a diverse palette of drought tolerant medicinal and edible plants
Guild Build an Orchard: determine best function/aspect then plant a variety of plants for pollinators, mulch, fertility, weed barrier and more

Activities:

Build an outdoor sink station
Build a tool organizer
Plant a reused bathtub with root crops (ginger and turmeric)
Make ollas and bury by established shrubs (forsythia and lilac)
Make switchel and granola

Demonstrations:

How rooftop rainwater connects to an existing swale

We will be implementing several facets of a recently completed permaculture design for the PermaBlitz Host and site. This is a fabulous opportunity to learn how a permaculture design goes from design to implementation, using the power of our community!

Projects:

Mulch pathways per design
Inoculate an existing fruit tree bed with Garden Giant (Stropharia rugoso-annulata) edible mushroom spawn and plant guild building plants
Build a trellis to grow Hops (Humulus lupulus) to shade greenhouse and house in summer

Activities:

Plant potatoes and other root crops in 5 gallon buckets
Build worm bins out of plastic totes
Trim Bay branches (Laurus nobilis), discuss its use and function
Make refreshing Switchel, a natural electrolyte drink

Extra Projects (as time allows):

Plant blueberries and other edible/pollinator plants
Build a tool organizer out of a pallet & learn how to repair tools
Build a wattle border for a garden bed out of grape vines

Learn HOW to grow fruits, nuts, herbs, mushrooms, vegetables, and other plants in a way that mimics natural ecosystems. Edible forest gardens yield diverse food for our dinner table, other useful products we need, as well as healthy habitats.

In this Hands On Workshop (HOW) we will provide you an introduction to edible forest gardening. When you leave you will have tools readily available to start on your own forest gardens at home.

Set the Stage

goals, site assessment, W-A-S, patterns, mapping, and species selection

Practice

site preparation, plant stock, planting, mulching, and seasonal maintenance
